What would you do if you
had two hours of your life left? What if you had one month left?
Would you get to see your first grandchild born or maybe dance
with her at her wedding?
What if I told you that
you could add an extra two hours, a week or even extra years to
your life. According to a Harvard University study, you can gain
about two hours of life expectancy for every hour of regular
exercise, even if you don’t start until middle age.
That means if you walk for
30 minutes a day at least six days a week, you could potentially
add six hours to your life after one week, or an extra day after
one month. That’s about an extra month of life after two years
of walking regularly.
Life is too precious and
short to squander even a minute of extra time. That is why Lee
Memorial Health System has proudly partnered with the American
Heart Association’s Start! Campaign, a walking program intended
to help fight heart disease and stroke by encouraging workplace
walking programs.
From Monday, Oct. 4
through Friday, Nov. 12, we are challenging our employees to
join us in the Start! Walking Challenge!
We want you and your
co-workers to join us, too, for a little friendly competition!
It’s easy! Register your business or organization with
Bridgett.Ashford@fowlerwhite.com. Bridgett will send you the
information you need to get moving. Once your place of
employment has established a Start! walking group, you simply go
to
www.startwalkingnow.org and log the miles you walk during
the challenge time period.
Companies will be judged
by the average number of miles logged per employee. The winning
team will be announced and honored with a traveling trophy Dec.
11 at the Lee County Start! Heart Walk.
Just 30 minutes a day of
regular exercise, such as walking, can improve your heart health
and reduce risk of stroke by lowering your bad cholesterol
levels and blood pressure. Making physical activity a part of
your everyday life, such as walking on your break or lunch hour,
also helps you to control your weight, prevent bone loss, boost
energy levels and manage stress.
Don’t let a minute of life
slip through your fingers. Step up to the Start! Walking
Challenge today!
Lee Memorial Health System Wins two Florida Hospital
Association Awards!
The Florida Hospital
Association—FHA—has named Lee Memorial Health System the “Best
Hospital Workplace” in the FHA’s 2010 Celebration of Service
Awards. Our health system also tied to win the 2010 “Community
Benefit” award.
Lee Memorial Health System
won “Best Hospital Workplace” for our high employee satisfaction
survey trends and new nursing retention strategies—which include
the Nursing Intern Development Program, a revamped version of
our Nursing Intern Program, that launched in 2010 to help nurses
orient to a hospital environment more quickly, and
Pass-Me-SafeLee, a standardized approach to help eliminate any
miscommunication during patient “hand-offs” when one nurse is
ending her shift and another is just coming to work.
Our health system won the
“Community Benefit” award for helping establish the Lee County
Behavioral Triage Center, a community partnership that provides
an alternative for those exhibiting signs of mental illness that
would otherwise have to be taken to a hospital emergency
department or to jail.
Lee Memorial Health System
will be presented the Celebration of Service Awards during FHA’s
Annual Meeting Oct. 13 in Orlando.
Peace,

Jim Nathan
