Adopted Patient Program

Patients and visitors who have had bariatric surgery elsewhere are welcome to join our program for follow up care and support. For a nominal fee, you’ll begin with a nutritional evaluation with our program dietician. Once the initial evaluation is complete, you can take advantage of the same education , support groups, and other resources other patients use. You will be scheduled for additional check-ins with our dietician throughout the year, and surgeon if necessary.

Post-operative follow up is essential for successful weight loss and basic health. Whether you’ve had an adjustable band, sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass, your stomach is much smaller, so you must pay close attention to eating not just the right amount, but the right kinds of foods to ensure you get the nutrients you need.

If you have a gastric band, such as the LAP BAND or Realize band, you may also need fills or adjustments from time to time. Adopted band patients meet with LMHS’ bariatric surgeon, Dr. Shieh, to assess their current band fill and whether adjustments are necessary. Regular follow up will also alert you and our team to any potential slips or problems with your band.

Referral Center and Revisional Surgery

Complications or problems resulting from bariatric procedures are not common, but if they do occur, they can be very serious. Performing surgery on a patient who has had a bariatric procedure is different than doing so on other patients, because their anatomy has often been changed. Dr. Shieh has handled performed many revisional surgeries to correct problems like  worn or slipped bands, corroded staples and more. Some revisional procedures can even be done laparoscopically without a single cut. Our staff can also work with patients whose problems can be eased by adjusting their diet or lifestyle as well.
