Typically, candidates for bariatric surgery must be older than 18 years and weigh 100 pounds more than their ideal body weight, which is a BMI greater than 40. Bariatric surgery may also be an option for those older than 18 with a BMI between 35 and 40 who suffer from life-threatening cardiopulmonary problems or diabetes.
For potential candidates interested in bariatric surgery with BMI's less than 35 , each case is reviewed individually. Typically most insurers won't cover the procedure if your BMI is less than 35. However, there have been exceptions.
- Low probability of success with non-surgical measures
- Willingness to be well-informed and motivated during the process
- Willingness to participate in treatment and long-term follow-up care
- Not be suffering from any other disease contributing to obesity
- Not have a history of alcohol or substance abuse
