What Are the Best Ways to Treat Obesity?
We are a culture consumed with weight loss, whether it's 10 pounds or 100 pounds. Americans spend more than $33 billion each year on weight loss products and services. However, these programs have a failure rate of up to 95 percent after five years. Studies indicate that people who complete non-surgical weight loss programs and lose approximately 10 percent of their body weight gain one-third of it back within one year, and they gain nearly all of it back within five years. There is little evidence to suggest that any non-surgical treatment will achieve, and more importantly, sustain weight loss in the severely obese population.
That is why bariatric surgery, in combination with a proper diet and exercise, is increasingly considered to be one of the best treatments for those battling morbid obesity.
