Radiation oncology
uses radiation waves to treat cancer, particularly tumors.
Radiation, which destroys a cancer cell's ability to reproduce,
is often combined with surgery, chemotherapy or hormone therapy
as a means to eliminate cancer cells.
Radiation can be an
external form of treatment, where an X-ray beam is pointed
directly at the body part requiring treatment, or it can be
internal, where an implant delivering the radiation is placed
directly into or near the tumor.
