Your primary, or general, doctor provides
management of acute and chronic illnesses, health maintenance,
immunizations, screening tests for communicable diseases and cancers
and treatment of minor injuries and common complaints. Primary care
normally is the first level of health care for individuals and
families.
The main providers of primary care are physicians who specialize
in internal medicine, family practice and pediatrics. Also, many
women use gynecologists as their primary doctors. Primary care
doctors and their patients usually establish long-term
relationships.
To detect illness at an early stage, before it requires immediate
attention or becomes an emergency, it's a good idea to:
- visit your doctor annually for preventive care
- practice good health maintenance behaviors
- have recommended health screening tests
