The general surgeon
is not a "generalist," but rather a specifically and highly
trained specialist. He or she manages a broad range of surgical
conditions affecting almost any area of the body—the
whole patient. The surgeon, therefore, must have the knowledge
and experience common to all surgical specialties.
General surgery includes
the following areas:
-
Alimentary tract (digestive organs)
-
Abdomen and its contents, including the pelvis
-
Breast
-
Skin, soft tissue and musculoskeletal system
-
Chest
-
Head and neck
-
Vascular system
-
Endocrine system
-
Cancer
-
Trauma
-
Critically ill patients
