Functional Heartburn
January 4, 2009

Burning in the chest, coughing or trouble swallowing can all be symptoms of indigestion or an acid reflux condition. For some patients finding physical evidence of those kinds of conditions can be difficult.

Dr. Sandra Jara is a gastroenterologist with Lee Memorial Health System. She says, “There are patients who complain of heartburn but endoscopically they may not have any evidence of esophagitis. That may be something that is functional heartburn or something that could be called visceral hypersensitivity meaning that their esophagus is just sensitive.”

She says some people are more prone to develop these types of conditions than others. “It seems like female predominance is seen.” People, especially women who are under a lot of stress or suffer from anxiety also tend to be more prone to developing functional heartburn. Dr. Jara says, “In those patients a trial of medications may be of benefit.” Treatments including certain forms of antidepressants have been successful in treating functional heartburn.

If you experiencing regular and uncomfortable symptoms of heartburn or indigestion it’s advised that you visit your physician. Things like fatty, spicy foods in large portions can trigger heartburn or indigestion.
