Brittni's Story
January 5, 2007

Every day an estimated 74 people receive organ transplants and many people are on waiting lists right here in Southwest Florida.

Brittni Colas is your typical 14-year-old teenager, except there's one thing that's not so typical about her. She's been diagnosed with rare vascular malformations causing her to live in constant danger of a life threatening hemorrhage. "I'm on a transplant list for 4 transplants, but we don't know when I'm going to get them. We'll just get the call and we'll have to leave."

Brittni will need to undergo a lifesaving transplant for a liver, bowel, stomach and pancreas. But for now Brittni doesn't just sit around, she and her mother speak at local schools about the importance of being an organ donor. They also attend a local transplant recipient support group.

President of transplant recipients of SW Florida Jerry Dinnan says, "Our support group is open to every transplant recipient, their family, the caregivers and anyone else that may be interested in organ and tissue donation."

Brittni says, "They've made me stronger cause knowing that they've done it and they've survived and I know that I can do it."

Our local Southwest Florida community has also pulled together to help Britnni. To find out more information on Brittni's story you can visit her website at helpbrittni.org.

The family now lives their lives on standby, waiting for the call that can come at any moment. But until it does, they've adopted a philosophy one that we can all learn from. Brittni's Mother Marci says, "We try and live everyday to the fullest."

And that's something we should all be doing. Another thing to do-tell your family your wishes once you've made the life saving decision that in the event of your death, you'd like to be an organ donor.
