Heart Health: Don't Hold it In
January 6, 2007

Have you ever regretted not expressing your true feelings to someone? In today's Health Matters John Biffar finds out that your health may suffer when you don't speak your mind.

Gilda Angeloff says that holding your feelings in can cause stress and it can affect your physical health - so it's important to identify the causes of stress in your life and do everything you can to minimize them.

"I think it's really important to speak your mind because inside stress can really be damaging to a person. Inward stress, if you don't release it, can really make your life miserable."

Gilda knows the damage that can be done to your body by holding true feelings in. "If you keep things pinned up inside of you, even the littlest things can just turn out to be monument us.

Every part of your body will ultimately feel stress if you don't release it."

Cardiologist Elizabeth Cintron has seen the effects of stress on patient's bodies and knows it can be significant. "Stress hormones circulate around in your body and those circulating stress hormones can lead to increase blood pressure of heart rate, and that in effect can lead to future development of coronary heart disease."

Gilda has made the change to speak her mind and it is making her feel better already. "I managed to get through it, and I feel great now, I really do."

To live a healthier life you may want to practice solving problems and asking others for help and guidance rather than holding things in and letting stress build.

It's important to be aware of what your body is telling you when you're not telling others what's really on your mind.
