Cancer Center Groundbreaking
January 7, 2008

The various aspects of cancer treatment can be hard to keep up with. But Lee County is now helping to mold the future of cancer care. Not long ago officials with LMHS broke ground on a breakthrough approach to cancer treatment. The ceremony site, which is on the corner of I-75 and Daniels Blvd, will house a one of a kind facility for cancer patients in southwest Florida. Laurie Wise is an Oncology Care Specialist with Lee Memorial Health System. She says, “The cancer center is actually the first of its kind where we’re bringing all of the services, medical and support services together under one roof.” Jim Nathan, the President and CEO of Lee Memorial Health System says the center will be a place where patients can come for multiple treatments and services. “It will be a compassionate, loving, one stop shop for cancer services for patients, their families and clinicians.” Laurie agrees that the center will offer a variety of services in one location. “If they need radiation they can get the radiation they can go to the lab they can go to the healing garden they can get their chemo therapy or they can go to an educational class all in one building.” Administrators say that the new cancer center will not only focus on curing cancer but also helping to heal the mind and spirit of the patients and their families. “Anyone that has had their life touched by cancer knows that everyone is affected by it so by putting in the healing garden and the meditation areas and really trying to focus on the mind, spirit and body together we believe that it will better the experience for the patient,” says Laurie. The center is scheduled to open in October of 2008. It will also include an 80-thousand square foot diagnostic building.
