Gestational Diabetes
January 20, 2009

Around 27 weeks most pregnant women are screened for a condition called gestational diabetes.

Amy Carroll, a registered dietitian and diabetes educator says, “It’s caused by a high level of placental hormones in the blood. In some people that causes them to be insulin resistant, similar to Type 2 diabetes.”

While it may make a woman’s pregnancy a bit more difficult, gestational diabetes can be managed. It’s important to learn how to treat the condition so that you and your baby stay healthy during and after pregnancy. “The principles we teach our gestational patients, we encourage them to continue even after the baby is delivered…healthy eating, exercising, things we should all do, to lower the risk,” says Carroll.

Lee Diabetes Care offers programs related specifically to gestational diabetes. Amy says when it comes to having a healthy pregnancy, diabetes education is crucial for all moms to be. She adds, “We also have a Healthy Start grant so pregnant women who have gestational and might not have medical insurance should still ask their doctor for a referral because we can cover the cost of that.”

If you want to learn how to get involved in one of those programs you can call 239-573-5720.
