Alex Greenwood is the system director of operations for Gulf Coast Hospital. He says, “Since the design phase, the focus has been on patient care and the health and well being of the patient; to promote a quick recovery from whatever they may have going on in the hospital.”

Built adjacent to the Gulf Coast Hospital, Gulf Coast Medical Center will have a full service cardiac and vascular program, an open heart surgical site and a transplant center. The new facility will also offer more general space for patients, visitors and staff. “It’s going to be expanded total to 560,000 square feet with 349 total beds, 233 which are private beds,” says Greenwood.

While the new hospital is still considered a construction site, the final preparations are underway right now to welcome patients in the coming weeks. Patients from Southwest Florida Regional Medical Center will be transferred to this new facility in March. Greenwood says, “As far as structurally the upper floors are pretty much done. We’re doing some punch list items now, patching some paint and things like that, moving in equipment. We are about 60 days from the patient move which is going to happen on March 8th.”

One major addition to the facility is an expanded emergency department which will be increased by 16 new treatment rooms, brining the total to 42.
