Sleep Apnea Symptoms
January 22, 2008

The symptoms of conditions like sleep apnea can greatly interfere with your daily life. “You’re sleepy all day long. You would fall asleep watching television. You would doze off reading a book and if it’s bad enough you would fall asleep at work,” says Dr. Razak Dosani, a board certified sleep doctor with Lee Memorial Health System. While those sleepy symptoms may seem significant, many people choose to ignore them. Dr. Dosani has seen that denial first hand. He says, “The patients who feel tired, sleepy and lazy, in society it’s considered the sign of a loser or a sign of somebody who is lazy and has no motivation. Not too many patients or people would like to admit that.” In fact most sleep specialists say that it’s usually another person who convinces a patient with a sleep disorder that there is a problem and it should be treated by a doctor. “Frequently we see that in our practice that it is a spouse who insists there is a problem and frequently the patient will deny that there is a problem most of the time and says I’m awake. The spouse says no he’s not he falls asleep talking to me,” says Dr.Dosani. Talk with your physician if you’re feeling tired or falling asleep at inopportune times. They can refer you to a sleep specialist who will likely be able to treat your condition successfully. “With the treatment you can relieve most of the symptoms if not all and it can change your life to again an active lifestyle,” says Dr.Dosani.
