Small Goal Success
January 22, 2009 |
In a fight to lose weight and better control her Type 2 diabetes, Shirley Wallace
set some specific, healthy goals.
Dean Mantion is an exercise specialist at the Fort Myers Rehab and Wellness Center.
He
says, “We put her on some short term goals, regularly weighed her and kept her
up on aerobic exercise and strength training and about halfway through we set her
sights on doing a 5k.”
After a few months of training she was able to cross the finish line. “She made
it all the way through. It was her and a whole bunch of friends that were walking
with her and they were all determined. A lot of them it was their first one and
they were all determined to go through it together and end it, finish it, complete
it together,” says Mantion. Wallace says, “I did it and so I liked it. It wasn’t
as bad as I thought it was.”
Area exercise specialists say to follow in Shirley’s footsteps. Setting and achieving
small goals can help you stay on a healthy fitness track. Heather Brown is an exercise
specialist at the Cape Coral Wellness Center and says, “Young, old and even if you
haven’t exercised in years, I tell people start out slow and set small goals and
go from there. If you haven’t taken a walk in five years and you walk ten minutes
after work that’s huge.”
Mantion adds, “A lot of times great success can be made starting with small steps
and keeping them going.” You can also set goals as simple as doing more fun activities
like dancing or gardening a few times a week.
