Epilepsy
January 30, 2009 |
Childhood epilepsy, or seizure disorder, is a neurological condition that affects
the nervous system. Some types may be associated with an underlying problem while
others are genetic.
Dr. Jose Colon is a pediatric neurologist with Lee Memorial Health System. He says, “There is a third group where
some children just have them and we don’t have the
answer on why they have them. And most of these they actually end up outgrowing,
sometimes they don’t.”
The Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida has a staff that focuses on this disorder
and makes it easier for the families to deal with. “It’s hard on families nowadays
to have to make a trip, to have to travel to either Tampa or Miami when they have
a Children’s Hospital in their backyard that we can address their needs,” says Dr.
Colon.
Early diagnosis is a key in treating epilepsy and speaking with your doctor about the right treatment is essential. Dr. Colon adds, “One of the things that we try
to do is really improve someone’s quality of life by trying to maximize their control
of their seizure disorder as well as also try to minimize the side effects that
medications can have.”
Along with medications there are many treatment options available.
