Go Red .... For Women
Air Date: February 2, 2006

Need to get a head start on what to wear tomorrow? Believe it or not, what color you wear could send an important message.

Bonnie Culbreth always associated heart attacks with men, until she started experiencing some strange symptoms. "The amazing thing is that the symptoms are just so totally different many times, that women do not recognize this and this was my case."

Like bonnie, most people don't realize that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women-and of men-but the good news is that heart disease can be prevented. That's why the American Heart Association has launched the national wear red for women campaign. Kathleen Brennan says that " Friday, Feb. 3rd is National Go Red for women day and women across the country, and men are asked to wear red to show their support for increasing awareness of heart disease and how it affects women. Heart disease is the number 1 killer of women in the United States and that adds up to 1 out of 3 women are affected by heart disease. And stroke."

Cardiologist Elizabeth Cintron says that cardiovascular disease is mostly preventable, so understanding these serious health threats can make a lifesaving difference for all women. "They need to stay up to date for prevention of heart disease, meaning, their blood pressure control, maintaining a good cholesterol profile, maintaining an active lifestyle, with exercise."

I'm wearing red to bring awareness for the women in my life and I hope you will too. And don't forget to help drive the message home by letting people know why you're wearing read.

This cause is so important since cardiovascular disease claims more women's lives than the next six causes of death combined - about 500,000 women's lives a year.
