Pregnant with Twins
February 9, 2007

Most "parents to be" know raising a child can be difficult, but what happens when that expected one turns into two?

When Edelweiss Jose first found out she was pregnant with twins she didn't think twice about how hard it was going to be, but how lucky she was to have double the blessing. "You don't question how hard it's going to be you just do it."

Obstetrician Mahnee Dinsmore explains that a woman's experience being pregnant with twins can be just as healthy as any other expectant mother, but there's certain precautions to take once you find out you're having two babies instead of one. "Women who have twins need to be seen by a maternal fetal medicine specialist. There are a lot of things that can go on in a twin pregnancy that are not good."

Dr. Dinsmore says that women should also educate themselves and consult with their doctor about several risk factors that go along with a twin pregnancy. "There are more women who have pre-term deliveries with twin pregnancies than women who have only one baby."

Dr. Dinsmore also says that if the saying goes that pregnant women eat for two then does that mean if you're pregnant with twins, you're eating for three? "Considering, you know, those babies they only weigh 6 or 7 pounds.that does not mean you get to gain.you know. Average weight gain during pregnancy should be 25 to 35 pounds; you don't want to go 50 to 70 pounds with twins; that is not a good thing."

Just remember in the end, having twins may be twice the work but it can also definitely be twice the reward.

About one out of every 32 babies born is a twin and your risk of having twin's increases, as you get older.
