Youth Triathlon
February 9,  2009

Triathlon is the fastest growing participation sport in the country and it’s not just geared towards adults anymore.

Angie Ferguson is an exercise physiologist. She says, “We wanted to design a program that can really engage the youth in our community and get them out there and really promote a healthy, fitness is fun, life long type of attitude that they can incorporate throughout their lives.” That’s why Ferguson has created a local youth triathlon team. Kids of all ages are encouraged to join as long as they have basic swimming skills, can run one mile and are comfortable riding a bike.

She adds, “We are going to be working with the children, helping increase their aerobic endurance, helping increasing their strength, endurance, teaching them very good swimming skills. We’ll also be giving very valuable bike handling and bike safety skills.”

Pediatric Orthopedics of Southwest Florida will be offering a pre-participation screening to make sure kids are fit to compete. They will also be onsite during the eight-week training course. Michael Young, a physician’s assistant with Pediatric Orthopedics says, “We’ll be out there every Saturday making sure the kids are safe, assisting the coaches on what they’re doing but if there’s an injury or something we’ll be there to make sure that they’re, they’re safe.”

After the eight week training, kids will compete at the Meek and Mighty Triathlon event in Saint Petersburg, Florida. The triathlon team will meet every Saturday for eight weeks starting February 21st. For more information or to sign up, contact Geared Up Multisport at 239-246-2920
