Walk in Wholeness
February 12, 2008

One year ago a local group of walkers were all facing some health challenges. So the speedy seniors decided to sign up for the Walk in Wholeness Fitness Program. Rudy Rouse says he joined the program at the perfect time. “I was concerned about my healthcare and we have a parish nurse at St. Michael Lutheran Church and she encouraged me to take some positive steps on my own.” Lee Memorial Health System Parish Nurses recruited Rudy and 149 other local church goers. 18 different faith communities had a walking program designed to meet their spiritual and physical goals. Barbara Cavanaugh is a member and supporter of the program. “I also find it physically exhilarating and spiritually very important connection no matter where I walk, I always feel that,” she says. Bob Sheldon agrees that walking has helped his health and his spirit. “There’s a lot to look at as you walk and you pass the same people every day and greet one another so it’s rather enjoyable.” Now, a year later the walkers are feeling and seeing the benefits of their hard work. “I’ve lost about 40 pounds in that year, I feel more vigorous,” says Rudy. Barbara says her blood pressure has gone down and as for Bob, he says, “My cholesterol is very much improved, my blood pressure’s good and my doctor was very happy this week with my annual physical.” For more information on the Walk in Wholeness Program you can call 239-432-3182. Parish nurses tried to keep the program interesting by organizing Biblical walks, periodic meetings and motivational messages.
