National Donor Day
February 14, 2007

More than 90,000 patients currently await a life saving organ transplant, and at the same time, 19 people die waiting everyday. In today's Health Matter's, John Biffar tells us why we celebrate National Donor Day today and explain how your donation could be the ultimate gift this Valentine's Day.

Brittni Colas who is awaiting a multi organ transplant says, "I'm a pretty average girl. I hang out with my friends and youth group is my favorite thing to do."

You wouldn't know it by looking at 15-year-old Brittni Colas, but there's one thing that makes her very different. She suffers from rare vascular malformations and she's on our nation's organ transplant waiting list. "I'm waiting on 4 transplants: a liver, stomach, bowel and pancreas."

And like thousands of Americans who are waiting for a transplant, Brittni is in desperate need of the organs in order to save her life. In the meantime Brittni has learned about the importance of organ donations. "I thought that I was this perfect child and could never get hurt or anything and then this happened. I really didn't know about organ donors yet."

Transplant Director Dave Mainous says that you could help those you love or for that matter people you don't even know this Valentine's Day, by becoming a registered organ donor and then taking one key step. "Say something to your family, please say something to your doctor."

Dave also says that you can donate your organs after you die, or for certain organs like the kidneys, you can even be a living donor. "You can live a long, normal, fruitful life with a single kidney. You know, the good Lord's given us a couple so maybe everybody ought to give up one."
