Preventing Injuries
February 19, 2009 |
Participation in any sport, whether it’s recreational skate boarding or flag football,
can teach kids to stretch their limits. But any sport also carries the potential
for injury.
Michael Young is a physician’s assistant at Pediatric Orthopedics. He says, “We
see a lot of minor injuries and sometimes some bad injuries, but a lot of the stuff
is preventable just by being safe.” The first rule of safety is having the proper
equipment. “Wear wrist guards when you’re rollerblading, wear a helmet when you’re
riding your bike, one person on the trampoline at a time. Common sense stuff,” Young
adds.
And because children will sometimes rule out common sense, their activities should
be closely supervised by adults. Young says, “A lot of it is education of the parents.
Make sure that you are supervising your kids in what they’re doing, and know where
they’re at and why they’re out there doing it.”
Since parents can’t be everywhere at once, it’s important to talk to your child
about sports injuries. If any injury does occur then you should get to a pediatrician
right away so your child can get back in the game.
