Helmet Safety

Ninety thousand people suffer head injuries each year, and almost all them could have been prevented with proper protection.
Like many kids, Chris Molloy admits he doesn't always wear his helmet like he should. "Sometimes a helmet just gets in the way when you're out skating in the streets. It just kind of annoys you when it's hot out."
Bike Safety School Instructor Dan Moser says that a helmet is the best way to protect yourself against head injury whether you're skating, bicycling, or playing a sport and could prevent almost 85% of accidents. "They really add to the safety factor even more than seat belts do in a car so they really do work."
Dan also says that helmet can't protect you if it's hanging in the garage- it has to be on your head. Checking to make sure it fits correctly is also just as important as wearing the helmet itself. It's also important for parents to educate their children on the importance of helmet safety, especially while riding a bike in public ways. "Any child under 16 is compelled by law to wear a bike helmet. I would say the law of nature would compel you to have your child wear a bike helmet."
And what is possibly the best step that parents can take to impress upon their children the importance of helmet safety? By wearing one themselves.
And remember if your helmet becomes cracked or you are in an accident, be sure to replace it before getting back to action.
