The pill can be an effective method of birth control when taken correctly, but many women find it difficult to remember to take it daily.

Gynecologist Mahnee Dinsmore explains that the NuvaRing offers women a quick and easy alternative to a birth control pill everyday. "It's as easy to put in as a tampon. Any women who can put in a tampon can definitely put in a ring. It's not something that you have to worry about every day, you don't even have to think about it."

Dr. Dinsmore says that the NuvaRing prevents the ovaries from producing mature eggs by releasing two hormones, estrogen and progesterone; these hormones are the same as in most birth control pills, just delivered differently. "It is a simple little plastic ring. It has a small amount of hormone on it, it gets put in the vagina as apposed to a pill or a patch or an injection. It tends only to affect more or less symptomatically the pelvis. Therefore, women who have bad migraines from oral contraceptives, breast tenderness, nausea, have much decreased side-effects compared to a pill or a patch."

Dr. Dinsmore also says that the benefits of the NuvaRing don't stop there. Because the doctors tell us, the NuvaRing exposes women to half the amount of hormones that they would have on a typical cycle and it works on a twenty-four day period. "The pill's been around since the 70's. We've gone down in dosages.down and down and down. Now we have, instead of a 21 day pill, we have a 24 day pill.thereby reducing the menstrual flow to a two to three day menses.much, much better for a lot of women."

Dr. Dinsmore adds that women on the NuvaRing also say they experience less side effects than they did while taking the pill. "Also it tends to not give you the ups-and-downs of hormones that the 21 day pill gave you."
