Vaginal Cancer Survivor
February 26, 2008 |
Lyida Christie thought she had beaten vaginal cancer. But ten years after her
first diagnosis the disease decided to fight back. “I had cancer previous in ‘98
but there was one cell that kind of stood hidden in the vaginal area and it was
smaller than a pinhead so it wasn’t detected,” says Lydia. She soon learned that
cancerous cell had caused a vaginal tumor. The fifty year old went through six
rounds of chemotherapy and 25 intense radiation treatments. Lydia says, “They
felt they could be intense with me with the radiation and chemo together and it
proved to be a good choice. I ended up getting catheters to help with the
radiation to shoot directly to the tumor which dissolved the rest of it.” Now
she is cancer free and ready to begin her life again for the second time. “I
would love for women to know that once you’re past the adjustment of getting
back on your feet do whatever you can to get back. You’re going to wake up every
morning just enlightened with yourself when you realize the things you can
accomplish.” Speaking of accomplishments, Lydia participates in many cancer
awareness events and fundraisers like this fashion show. But even more
empowering, she’s currently training to compete in her first triathlon. “I’m
running my first three miles ever for now two weeks. So it’s been powerful.” For
