Morning Headaches
February 27, 2007

Sometimes getting up in the morning isn't easy, especially if your head is throbbing. But more importantly, that throbbing headache could be a warning sign about your health.

There's an important reason why sleep disorder specialist Dr. Holly Hannon wants to see more people getting a good night's rest. "Poor sleep quality really affects just about everything during the daytime".

Registered Polysominagrapher Rob Galbreath explains that some signs that you're not getting enough sleep can include mood swings, low energy and sometimes even morning headaches. "The main cause that they found for these morning headaches is that the fluctuations with the heart rate, the blood pressure and the oxygen levels through the night."

Rob says that people who wake up with headaches, especially those who snore, might have a common sleep disorder called sleep apnea. "What we see also what we see with sleep apnea one of the symptoms are morning headaches, after a full night sleep people experience morning headaches."

Rob also says that if you ever have a headache that's extremely painful and comes on all of a sudden, you should consult your doctor. It could be the sign of an impending stroke.

"A warning sign of a stroke are sudden severe headaches with no known cause so, this is a little different with what people might experience."

So the next time you wake up with a headache, don't be so quick to grab the aspirin. It may be a warning for something more severe.

Many people who suffer from chronic morning headaches wake up with pain frequently, usually between the hours of 4 and 8AM.
