Silicone Implant Update
February 29, 2008

Dr. Michael Kim is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon. He says, “A little bit more than a year ago the FDA finally approved the release of silicone implants for cosmetic breast augmentation as they have been shown to be safe and not cause any known medical diseases.” But even with backing from the FDA Dr. Kim says many women are still concerned about putting silicone in their bodies. “The public cannot get out of their mind that there’s a problem with silicone so even up until today patients come into the office when I mention silicone implants they still think there’s a major problem and they didn’t even know they were available.” Many surgeons say not only are silicone implants safe they also provide a much more natural result when it comes to cosmetic breast augmentation. “The saline have silicone on the outside and saline on the inside and they feel like a water balloon and they silicone are much more soft and have the density of breast tissue they’re much more natural feeling,” says Dr. Kim. Thanks to new technology silicone implants have a very low risk of leaking once they’re implanted inside the breast. “They’re made of a new cohesive gel so that even if there’s a small tear they don’t leak they’re not liquid like the old silicone,” says Dr. Kim. Women interested in getting breast implants should seek out a board certified plastic surgeon that uses only FDA approved implants. Most plastic surgeons even prefer to use silicone implants when reconstructing the breasts of cancer survivors.
