When it comes to our health, many of us hear different things about certain conditions that we begin to get fearful. But do we really know the facts about what we're afraid of?
One of the biggest health fears right now, for people of all ages, is the bird flu and the horrifying potential that it could evolve into a worldwide pandemic. 10 year old Ciara Richard says "I've heard that the bird flu is killing a lot of people and that it's dangerous and that it might come to America. I am kind of scared."
Infection control practitioner Lisa Taylor explains "People feel that they can't eat chicken, that they can't eat turkey and things that, like that and to my knowledge, they haven't found any bird flus in our poultry population to this point."
Lisa says that at this time a little more than 60 people in Asia have died of the bird flu. They were mostly poultry farmers infected directly by the birds and a human-to-human infection has not happened. There are places to rely on for he most up to date information on bird flu as well as other health concerns. "The CDC will give you the information straight up. It's usually very, very current as well."
Lisa also says that another health concern is meningitis, and the main the thing that people need to know is that there are two different types of meningitis. One is more dangerous than the other. "One is bacterial and that is very infections to people in your respiratory secretions. Then there's another type of meningitis called viral."
Viral meningitis will usually go away by itself, but bacterial meningitis can be serious.
The CDC is the Center for Disease Control and their website is www.cdc.gov.
