Nutritional Nightmares
March 2, 2007

Making informed nutritional choices is key to preventing future health problems.

College students like Max Soto are notorious for their busy schedules, which leave little time to maintain a healthy diet. "I know it makes sense to pay attention to what I eat, but habits are really hard to break."

Dieticians like Jeanne Struve emphasize the importance of developing good eating habits and knowledge about different foods. "Sometimes people are out there choosing items and they think it's fairly nutritious or it's not too bad and they would be absolutely shocked if they knew how many calories and fat were in it."

Now we've all heard about false advertising but here's something you may not know, just because a box says '0 trans fat' on the front doesn't mean that's necessarily true, that's because the FDA only regulates what's on the side of the box, so be sure you keep reading. Jeanne says, "Remember everything that's on a front of a food box is marketing. Turn it over and look at the nutrition facts label.that's where you'll find a more accurate picture of the food."

When it comes to food, Max still struggles with finding the time to make better decisions.

"My friends and I don't take into consideration what we eat and whatever we get our hands on is what we consume."

In fact, eating a piece of fruit for a snack instead of chips is just one simple thing you can do to start improving your diet today.

Parents can also some better role models for their children by eating a variety of fruits and vegetables everyday.
