Everblades Read
March 3, 2008 |
Being a kid in the hospital is usually not a fun experience. But the staff at
the Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida wants to help patients make the
best of their situation. Dr. Kim Shimoda is a psychologist with the Children’s
Hospital. She says, “We are able to help children adjust to really remarkable
circumstances. Kids are very resilient. I find that aspect of our patients and
our families a very hopeful and positive one.” Hospital staff and community
members organize special activities to help these little patients keep their
positive attitude. Today some all-star athletes are paying the patients a visit.
Kelly Cowen is a Child Life Specialist at the hospital. She says “When we went
to go tell them the Everblades were coming today they were about jumping out of
their beds putting their shoes on they were ready to go so this was really big
for them.” The big guys even took time to sit down with the little ones to enjoy
a good book. Jarrett Lukin is one of the players for the Florida Everblades
hockey team. “I just like seeing the kids smile. That’s why we’re here to get
some laughs and hopefully make their day better,” says Jarrett. Kelly agrees
that the visit from the players was a success. “They actually got on the floor
with them and hung out with them and read to them it was just a really big deal
that the kids got to interact with them in that manner.” Along with good books
the players and patients also got to eat some good food together. Jarrett says,
“It’s always good to hang out with them and hear what they have to say, they’re
always good for a couple of laughs.” For more information on volunteering your
