Senior Tips
March 5, 2008

Southwest Florida can seem like a playground for retirees. Many local seniors are able to fully enjoy this lifestyle because they have a positive outlook on staying healthy. Jean Hamilton says she’s quite active at the age of 80. “I have a spiritual relationship but I’m also active physically and I’m upbeat and I’m optimistic and I intend to enjoy every day that I have.” Ruth Holland says she makes sure she works on staying active as she ages. “I just work every day. I don’t let anything get me down. I want to keep going.” It’s clear that a positive attitude can motivate you to keep your body moving. Physicians say even mild exercise a few times a week can do wonders for an aging body. Richard Davis is a Cardiologist who agrees with that sentiment. “Begin a regular exercise program which can be as simple as a walking exercise program of say thirty minutes a day.” Bob Sheldon is a local senior who makes it a point to keep his legs moving every day. “You need to walk. Walking is your best exercise.” Specialists say it’s also important to exercise your brain to help keep things like your memory strong as you age. Baxter Cochran says he and his wife do various things to keep their brain in shape. “I do puzzles on the computer. I read a lot. I discuss a lot. Knowledge can’t hurt you there may be something to be gained. There’s certainly nothing to be lost.” Some seniors say even in your brain and body aren’t quite what they used to be, don’t be afraid to use them and take advantage of the health you have now. If you want to learn more about exercise groups and other activities for seniors contact the SHARE Club at (239)-772-6765. Research shows that people who exercise regularly are at a lower risk of developing things like Alzheimer’s and heart disease as they age.
