GCMC Patients
March 8, 2009

When one door closes, another opens. Today, Lee Memorial Health Systems opens its newest hospital: Gulf Coast Medical Center and at the same time, Southwest Florida Regional Medical Center closes its doors forever.

Equipment is in place and the staff trained and ready at the new Gulf Coast facility on Daniels Parkway. All Southwest Florida Regional patients are now being moved to the hospital. Each new room is state of the art and private. “With the plan, as it stands now, we’re getting started at 8am and hope to have it done by the time the sun goes down, around 6:30 – 7 pm,” says Alex Greenwood, System Director for Gulf Coast Hospital.

Southwest Florida Regional Medical Center, including its emergency department is now closed. “In case of an emergency, the first thing is to call 9-1-1 or EMS and they’re going to take you to the appropriate facility,” explains Greenwood.

Outpatient services that were available at Southwest Regional will be offered starting Tuesday, March 10th. Gulf Coast Medical Center, will also feature a 43 bed emergency room, a full service heart program, orthopedics, oncology, stroke unit, women’s services, and will house the region’s only kidney transplant center.

Patients making today’s move will also notice some added perks – each new patient room is not only private but features a flat screen TV, and computers for doctors and nurses to update a patient’s condition and vital signs.
