Memory Fit Camp
March 10, 2008 |
Jeanne Schilling recently noticed that her memory isn’t quite what it used to
be. She says, “The forgetfulness, the not paying attention is more frustrating
than anything.” So Jeanne and ten of her friends decided to put their brains on
a five week work out plan. Mickie Keeler is an educator or Older Adult Services
with Lee Memorial Health System. She says, “We are having what’s called a Memory
Camp and we have invited people in the community to come in and sign up for a
five week Memory Camp course.” Jeanne says, “So far the class has just been
wonderful.” During Memory Camp students learn and practice exercises that will
help them remember things more easily. This week they’re working on
categorization. Mickie says, “Categorization is putting similar things together
like water and coca cola it’s a liquid it’s a drink. Purse and wallet they both
hold money you know linking things together putting them categories.” She hopes
the camp will help these seniors remember simple but important information. “I
think mainly for us medications, appointments are so important to keep track of
and they get forgotten so trying to put those things together usually helps.”
Jeanne says even after a few classes, the camp has already enhanced her memory.
“I used to skim an article now I’m really reading and remembering things like
dates, names, places, and a lot of this information.” For more information on
Memory Fit Camp you can call the SHARE Club at (239)-772-6765. Memory Fit Camp
is based on a program developed by memory specialists at the University of
California Los Angeles. |
