Implanon
March 11, 2009

For some women, remembering to take that birth control pill can be a challenge. But a new birth control method recently approved by the FDA, could alleviate the forgetfulness.

“You don’t have to worry about taking a pill everyday, going to a pharmacist, you don’t have to worry about forgetting things,” says Dr. Paul Joslyn, an OB-GYN on the medical staff with Lee Memorial Health System.

It’s called Implanon. While its relatively new to the United States, more than 2 million women around the globe are already using it. “It’s a small rod, about this size, and it fits in the arm right underneath the skin, is very easy to put in and its good for three years of contraception and its very effective,” adds Dr. Joslyn.

Women are encouraged to talk to their OB-GYN if they are interested in using Implanon. A new procedure that could make remembering to take a daily pill, a distant memory.
