ER vs. Urgent Care
March 12, 2008

On any given day Doctor Larry Hobbs sees dozens of different ailments and injuries pass through his emergency room. He says if a patient is having certain kinds of symptoms or pain the ER should be their first stop. “Those type of things are abdominal pain, chest pain, severe headaches, high fevers, persistent nausea and vomiting those type of things require that you be seen in an emergency room or any significant trauma.” Dr. Hobbs says especially this time of year ER’s can become overcrowded with people who may not need emergency attention. “If we have enough of them coming in at a particular time like during a flu or cold season the emergency room waiting rooms tend to be filled with those type of patients.” But the emergency room does not have to be your only option or fast medical care. Urgent care centers may be a better option if you have more run of the mill symptoms or injuries. “Colds flus, strains, sprains even fractures, small lacerations bumps, bruises those types of things would do well to go to an urgent care center. An urgent care center is ideal because it is open at least part of the day. It’s walk in so you don’t need an appointment and they’re trained to handle those types of injuries and illnesses,” says Dr. Hobbs.
