Pregnant After the Pill
March 15, 2009

Sixteen million women rely on them everyday. And the decision to stop popping the pill and start getting pregnant may be easier than you think.

Dr. Paul Joslyn is an OB-GYN on the medical staff of Lee Memorial Health System. “There’s a misconception out there that if you have been on the birth control pill, that for prolonged period of time fertility is decreased,” says Dr. Joslyn. In some cases, taking the pill can actually increase the chance of getting pregnant. “Being on birth control pills does not make you infertile or decrease your fertility. In fact, it’s the opposite, it can actually preserve fertility,” adds Dr. Joslyn.

Past pill experience won’t harm a fetus, nor will it have any residual effects on a woman’s body. “Theres another misconception that was disproved many years ago, that if you have been on birth control pills a long time, the longer you are on them, the more time you have to give your body to return to normal and that’s not true at all,” explains Dr. Joslyn.

It’s important to speak with your doctor about your family plans before ditching the pill entirely.
