Plastic Surgery Fads
March 20, 2008 |
In just ten years the number of cosmetic surgeries performed in the United
States has increased by more than 400%. But some local surgeons say that
popularity may be putting some patients at risk. Dr. Michael is one of those
surgeons. He says, “Physicians that are not trained as surgeons doing black
market plastic surgery it’s very common and we see the patients sometimes with
complications and there’s no record.” Dr. Kim says it’s especially important for
patients to do research when it comes to quick-fix cosmetic procedures like
mini-face lifts that may promise little to no recovery time. “People don’t get
something for free. You don’t get a lot of down time you probably are not going
to have a great result,” says Dr. Kim. Your best bet may be to visit with a
Board Certified Plastic Surgeon and weigh all of your surgical options. “There
are some techniques we can do now that’s much less down time, less bruising,
less swelling. Do yourself a favor and at least see a board certified plastic
surgeon to look into these procedures rather than just signing up for someone
around the block who’s doing them.” Some patients are even opting to have
cosmetic procedures performed in their homes. But physicians say you may want to
think twice if you’re planning to have the girls over for a Botox party. “The
American Society of Plastic Surgery does not recommend Botox parties. It’s OSHA
which is regulations for needles, blood borne pathogens, etc. It’s certainly not
safe to bring needles in an environment where it’s not meant to be for example
in the home,” says Dr. Kim. In recent years Botox has been the top non-surgical
cosmetic procedure performed in the United States. Laser hair removal is the
second most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure. |
