Cape ER Update
March 23, 2009

Sounds of hammers and nails fill the air. Behind these concrete walls, the expansion of Cape Coral’s Emergency Room. The first phase is set to open in 2 months.

Part of this phase includes expanding the current waiting room. Blue tape lines the walls and ceilings, alluding to what lies on the other side. “That’s also when we’ll have an expanded triage area, we’re going to have three nurses to be able to do triage, a room for treatment for when you walk in the door, and then from that triage area, you are either going to go to the main emergency department or the new fast track area.,” adds Dr. Tim Dougherty, Medical Director for the Emergency Room.

The fast track system is designed to get help for patients quicker and easier. “When someone comes in with an ankle injury, they’re going to be able to get their xray in an expeditious fashion, and not be competing with the chest pains and abdominal pains in the main emergency department,” says Dr. Dougherty.

Then it’s on to phase two and three, which include expanding the emergency room to hold roughly 42 beds. Phase one will also feature brand new digital radiology equipment..
