Kidney Tests
March 25, 2009

They’re about the size of your first and fight to make sure your body is cleansed from toxins.

“The kidney is very complicated and that is why it’s important to be screened and monitored,” says Dr. Peggy Mouracade, a nephrologist on the medical staff of  Lee Memorial Health System.

Everyday, your kidneys sift through 2 quarts of waste and extra water, but one small hiccup in that process could mean a backup in the body and that could lead to kidney disease. “Kidney disease is quiet. I tell my patients its not very glamorous or sexy disease because you don’t watch television and see kidney disease,” adds Dr. Mouracade.

Doctors now prescribe just three simple tests that can put your mind, and your kidneys, at ease. The first: a blood pressure check-up. The second: a urine analysis to check for protein, which can be an early detection of kidney disease “We look at the lab work and we try to see if this is something new or old an then we basically sit down and et a history from somebody,” explains Dr. Mouracade. And finally, a blood test, which will determine if your kidneys are working properly to remove waste from the bloodstream.

Three ways to help your body stay clean and healthy.
