A Fight for the Cure for Alzheimer's
March 27, 2009 |
A financial breakthrough in the mystery behind Alzheimer’s disease. Congress has
passed a law providing billions of dollars for the National Institutes of Health,
some of that money will go toward Alzheimer’s research.
Doctors admit they are gaining a better handle on the disease, but more information
is desperately needed. “It turns out if you have a family history of Alzheimer’s
disease and you’re otherwise healthy, your risk of developing Alzheimer’s is lower
than somebody that doesn’t have a family history but has high blood pressure, diabetes,
high cholesterol, smokes, drinks and other lifestyle things, lack of exercise",
says Dr. Michael Raab, a geriatrician for Lee Memorial Health System.
Dr. Raab adds it’s never too late to reduce your risk by exercising both your body
and your mind. Those around you can also provide assistance. “Mostly it’s in your
partner, spouse, or significant other who will notice there are changes,” adds Dr.
Raab. And the earlier the diagnosis, the better the treatment.
As the financial resources to finding a cure start to take shape, it just goes to
show that prevention is priceless.
