Family Nutrition Makeover
March 29, 2009 |
It’s a rapidly growing problem here in the U.S. One out of every 3 children
is now considered overweight.
Sedentary lifestyles and alternating family schedules are just two of the reasons
scientists say healthy eating has been put on the back burner. “Basically, what
I find is that families are having a hard time coordinating their activities and
their work and school agendas all together,”
says clinical dietician Marjorie Chutkan.
Sitting down and actually planning out a week’s worth of nutritious meals and exercise
can keep the family on a healthy track. “Kids and parents need to be involved in
this meeting. Its not just for parents because its not like ‘ok, this is what I
am going to provide for my family, this is what they need to do.’ No, it has to
be a family affair,” adds Chutkan.
And when it comes to convincing kids to eat better, Chutkan suggests getting them
involved in the process. Chutkan says, “Getting kids in the kitchen has proven to
be very effective. If kids are allowed to plan and prepare meals, they are more
likely to eat it.”
The American Academy of Pediatrics stresses kids need to get up and moving as well.
They recommend no more
than 2 hours of TV everday for kids.
