Coffee and Skin Cancer
March 30, 2009

Some Americans simply can’t do without it: that morning cup of joe. Seattle researchers say they are studying to see if if java can keep skin cancer away. The idea has jolted mixed reviews.

Dr. Drew Kreegel, a plastic surgeon with Lee Memorial Health System says, “I am not certain about coffee.” Dr. Kreegel admits that while dietary habits can ward off certain cancers, there’s no concrete evidence for skin cancer.

“Vegetables and grains and wholesome diets, that kind of thing, are said to be protective against cancers, I don’t know if they are protective of skin cancers,” explains Dr. Kreegel.

He does stress the need to make sure you are using a line of defense that has already proven to fight skin cancer: sunblock. “At least an SPF 15 and that anything over that. Really, the benefit of that is you need to re-apply less often. The best thing is an SPF of 15 at least, 15 and a waterproof skin block and reapplying it regularly,” adds Dr. Kreegel.

A definite step in protecting your body from UV rays, while the caffeine controversy continues to brew.
