We're three months now into our new year, and how many of us are keeping up with our resolutions? For most people, New Year's resolutions become New Year's delusions by the end of February, especially the one about losing weight and being healthier.
There can be one very basic rule for us to follow to eat healthier. As a Registered Dietitian Jeanne Struve says, "As close to the ground as possible. Basically the more processed a food is the more things it's gone through, the less healthy it is. You want to get fresh fruits and vegetables and the fresher the better."
Helping kids to understand the importance of healthy eating, Rosie Emery is doing her part with the curious kids club. Like Jeanne, she's trying to get the message out that healthy eating is important- at every age. "Kids, if kids can get interested in what they're eating then perhaps and realizing that it's doing them good, it's making them feel good, giving them energy I think then they're more likely to start wanting to eat healthy."
There is something else that could be even more important than eating healthy. Jeanne also says, "You can eat perfectly, and if you don't get out there and move your body, exercise is every bit, if not in some ways more important than eating. Get out there and move your body, whatever it is."
Get up, get out and get active! Try it; it's a great way to stay healthy all year long. Rosie reminds us, "I know we're all stressed out, we've all got lots of work to do. But a bike ride at the end of the day, it makes everybody feel better."
Here's a couple of tips for a healthier you. One, you want to be sure you're eating the right foods and the other is to exercise and when you're doing that try to find something that you enjoy doing, it will be a lot more fun to stay healthier.
Talk to your doctor about how much exercise is right for you. A good goal for many people is to work up to exercising 4 to 6 times a week for 30 to 60 minutes at a time.
