Blepharoplasty

It’s an eye-opening experience, especially for women. Eyelid surgery has become one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries around.

”Well, you have older age groups in south Florida. As we age, unfortunately it takes its toll on eyelids,” says Dr. Kreegel, a plastic surgeon with Lee Memorial Health System.

While some procedures are purely cosmetic, some are done for medical reasons. It can open up peripheral vision, which often times is inhibited by saggy eyelids. “When you are looking straight and level, if your eyelids are droopy to the extent where they are coming down over the area that should be visible to you, then that is an upper visual field impairment,” explains Dr. Kreegel.

As Americans grow older, the skin around the eye stretches, muscles become weaker and fat accumulates. The procedure gets rid of the fat and in return, opens up the eye. “It’s like a curtain coming down and narrowing the upper visual field,” adds Dr. Kreegel.

Anyone contemplating eyelid surgery should consult their physician to see if they qualify. In some cases, insurance will cover some of the cost.
