Arthritis in Your 20s and 30s
April 7, 2009 |
Hear the word “arthritis” and some think its just an older person’s problem.
Dr. Juan Bustillo is a rheumatologist for Lee Memorial Health System. “Those tend
to begin very early, usually in the late teens, 20s, the symptoms begin although
the worst manifestations can be seen at a later age,”
says Dr. Bustillo.
And with a younger diagnosis comes different problems. “The more common types of
arthritis in that age group is usually the inflammatories,” adds Dr. Bustillo. Young
women may also feel the effects quicker than younger men. “It does have a lot to
do with hormones and the affect of hormones on the immune system, ”
explains Dr.
Bustillo.
If you are in your 30s or younger and are starting to experience some joint pain
and fatigue, you may want to alert your doctor. |
