Having a little one around is a joy but it also means there's safety precautions you need to be taking in your home.
One of the most important safety responsibilities we have regarding young children is keeping kids safe near any type of water. Senior Community Health Nursing Supervisor Glenda Wolnick says, "And that could be in a commode, in a bathtub, in a mop bucket because remember that children can drown in less than an inch of water."
Pediatrician Emilio Del Valle explains, "You can't leave them alone. Every year we have children that near drown or drown. Every single year."
And as your baby approaches the toddler stage there are outlets to cover, wires to move out of reach and household products that need to be locked up . Mother of two Jennifer Womble says, " They explore the world through all their senses and putting things in their mouth. Because everything is going in their mouths all of the time."
In order to avoid ending up in the emergency room, more and more parents are understanding why its so important to explore your home from a child's perspective for any dangerous situations. Glenda also says, "If we want to know what needs to be safer, we need to crawl on the floor a little bit. Because there's all these little bits and pieces on the floor that children can get choked on."
Another important safety responsibility is checking your window blinds making sure there are no dangling cords-they can be irresistible and very dangerous for infants and toddlers.
The window blind cords sold before 1995 had cords with loops at the end, they can be a strangulation danger for children and when a child is in serious trouble, they can't call out for help.
