P-PEC Patients

You’d never know it at first glance but Ethan Donath was born when he was only
23 weeks old. His mom Sharon says the little guy, “weighed one pound three
ounces and he did have a trach and a g-tube.” Ethan’s little sister Kendra was
also born with similar challenges. Sharon says, “Kendra was only 22 weeks old
when she was born.” Renee Verville is a Registered Nurse and Respiratory
Therapist that works with both Ethan and Kendra. She says, “They both have the
same diagnosis which is O.I. which is osteo-genesis imperfecta.” But the
siblings are making great progress in part thanks to the Prescribed Pediatric
Extended Care Program. Sharon says, “Oh they love it. Ethan loves it so does
Kendra they love going there.” The day-care setting offers medical care and
therapy to students like Ethan and Kendra. Now this pair is on an inspiring road
to success. “Just to watch her take the big first bite and it’s like yeah. You
know you make a big deal. They go from a baby with a tracheotomy and a
ventilator to walking and talking and three years later they come back and visit
and it’s just wonderful it makes you happy,” Renee says. The P-PEC program
serves nearly 30 area children and their care is usually covered by health
insurance. Another important part of care at the unit is socialization and peer
interaction which helps children like Kendra and Ethan develop normally. |
