Breast Augmentation
April 8, 2009

New numbers show that more than 11 million cosmetic surgeries were performed n 2008. One of the most popular: breast augmentation.

“I think its probably a cultural thing. American culture,” explains Dr. Drew Kreegel, a plastic surgeon with Lee Memorial Health System. Rachel Hoopes just recently had the procedure, “I thought about it for years. It was a long process and it was something that, well, I have four children so it was something that I could not get back through exercise, dieting, so I really wanted to do it for myself,”” says Hoopes.

But not all procedures are cosmetic. Some are for medical reasons. If you or someone you know is contemplating this sort of surgery, consultation with your doctor is extremely important to determine if you are the right candidate.

“He asked how comfortable I was with it and what I wanted out of it. What I was looking for, the end result,” explains Hoopes. Dr. Kreegel adds, “its very, very, important that the patient recognize that breast augmentation can produce impressive results physically, that it can improve your self-esteem but that it is not an end-all magic wand.”

Of course, with every procedure, there are health risks. “There’s always risks when there’s a surgery. Any type of surgery, whether its elective or emergent,” says Dr. Kreegel. Its also important for you to ask questions too, such as how the surgery will be performed, the cost, and the aftercare that’s required.
