Cornea Donation
April 14, 2008

Dr. Mark Gorovoy is perfection the art of a new corneal transplant in Southwest Florida. In the past four years he’s performed almost 600 of the procedures successfully. He says, “This new way is we’re just replacing this inside layer. We literally peel it off and stick a new inside layer in.” Helen Martin was a patient who had the DAESK transplant procedure. She says, “It’s marvelous. You can see you can see colors things you weren’t seeing at all and you didn’t have any pain in your eye at all. But as the popularity of the procedure increases so does the need for donated corneas. Dr. Gorovoy says, “This is donor tissue that’s donated it’s not synthetic material. Because we’re able to help more patients with this condition the supply of corneas needs to be increased. I really encourage everyone to be an organ donor.” Dr. Gorovoy’s patients know that without generous organ donors they would have likely lived the rest of their lives in the dark. Helen says, “This is wonderful because they use a little piece and it grows this beautiful new cornea for you.” Carolyn Boyer is another DAESK patient who is thankful for the cornea donors. “I thanked God for them and their families and stuff like that I would have the opportunity to have this because I think it’s great.” If you want to become and organ donor you can ask to have it marked on your driver’s license. It’s also important to tell your family and friends so that they have no doubts about your decision to donate. Surgeons use several layers from one donated cornea to save the vision of dozens of people.
