Volunteer Candidates
April 18, 2009 |
It’s National Volunteer Week – a time to recognize the men and women that give of
their time to help those in need.
“Oh, satisfaction. It’s a great job. I call it a job, but it’s not really a job,”
says Florene Johns, a volunteer at Lee Memorial Hospital. Her husband, David, also
volunteers. “You’ve been blessed with being able to get up everyday and enjoy life
to whatever degree you want to go but on the other hand you’re sharing with the
people who have been less fortunate for whatever reason,” describes David.
From all walks of life, and all ages and backgrounds, these volunteers sacrifice
a few hours each week, as information desk assistants, gift shop clerks, in postal
positions, even as couriers.
Donna Bradish, Director of Volunteer Services, says Lee Memorial Hospital is aggressively
seeking volunteers and aside from personal rewards, volunteers also get some financial
and health related benefits. “We provide a meal voucher to volunteers who have worked
at least four hours when they come in for their shift. We also provide volunteers
with any discount packages that are provided for the employees as well. We also
give volunteers flu shots, so they receive their flu shots annually, free of charge,”
adds Bradish.
Once selected, there’s an orientation period that each candidate must go through
and if you are toying with the idea of volunteering, these volunteers say you won’t
regret it. “I’d recommend it to anybody that wants to truly NOT claim their age.
To be in there and really give but you don’t think about it,” says David. “C’mon!
You’ll love it,” adds Florene.
You are encouraged to call any of the hospitals to see how a few hours could be
one of the biggest donations you can make for your community. Most volunteers work
one four-hour shift per week. |
